SUMMARY:OHIO RIVER RESTORATION PLAN Indiana Public Engagement Session
DESCRIPTION:Come join the Indiana Wildlife Federation\, National Wildlife Federation\, and Ohio River Basin Alliance to learn about the Ohio River restoration plan. This ambitious plan lays out a framework for how federal funding can help transform this Ohio River basin\, an area that has for far too long been ignored. The Ohio River basin encompasses over 80% of the Hoosier state and for far too long we have ignored it. This plan is a major milestone in moving forward\, restoring this vast geographic area\, and improving life for humans and wildlife alike. We will discuss the plan\, future steps and how you can use your voice to help shape the future of the entire basin. We will be graciously hosted by the Sam Shine Foundation\, and drinks and light snacks will be provided. Registration is Required.

SUMMARY:Cranes Over Indiana a IWF Member Gathering
DESCRIPTION:An evening with Lauren Benedict\, International Crane Foundation\, learning about Indiana’s conservation of Sandhill and Whooping Cranes. \n \nJoin us after work for a casual gathering with food/beverages\, comradery\, music\, and a presentation from the International Crane Foundation about Indiana’s role in protecting our migrating cranes and their habitats. \nCranes over Indiana: Indiana’s wetlands are home to Sandhill Cranes and endangered Whooping Cranes. In the not-so-distant past\, both Sandhill Cranes and Whooping Cranes faced near extinction throughout North America as they battled with increasing threats of unregulated hunting and habitat loss. Thanks to widespread conservation efforts\, Sandhill Cranes are now one of the most populous crane species in the world\, and Whooping Crane populations\, while still endangered\, are slowly growing. Today Indiana residents see around 60\,000-80\,000 Sandhill Cranes and 30 Whooping Cranes each year! Unfortunately\, Whooping Cranes and Sandhill Cranes continue to face threats in Indiana and across their flyway. Following this presentation\, you will be able to identify Sandhill Cranes and Whooping Cranes\, know the history of both species\, understand the current work our crane conservation partners are doing to protect cranes in Indiana and throughout their flyways and find out how you can be an ambassador for cranes in Indiana as a volunteer and citizen scientist. \n \n                                       Agenda \n5:00 PM – 5:45 PM\, Welcome + food/beverage + music \n5:45 PM – 6:30 PM\, Cranes Over Indiana with Lauren Benedict\, Outreach Biologist Assistant\, Indiana \n6:30 PM – 8:00 PM\, Music + mingle \nNot an IWF member? SUMMARY:Indiana Wetland Advocacy\, Preservation\, and Restoration
DESCRIPTION:This year\, the Indiana General Assembly passed SEA 389\, which significantly reduced protection for Indiana’s remaining wetlands.  It was a blow to all who understand the vital importance of wetlands to water resources and to wildlife\, but it was not an endpoint.  There is much we can still do ensure the continuation of Indiana’s wetlands.  The Hoosier Environmental Council and Indiana Wildlife Federation are hosting a webinar to review steps we can all take.   \nPlease join us for ‘Indiana Wetland Advocacy\, Preservation\, and Restoration’ Wednesday\, October 20\, at 4:00 PM Eastern/3:00 PM Central.  Register at:   tinyurl.com/3pzvc379 \n

SUMMARY:PARTNER EVENT - Indiana Wetlands II: Where are we now? Virtual Forum
DESCRIPTION:Much has happened since the first co-hosted forum with IWF Affiliate: White River Alliance and Purdue in February. First\, the passage of SEA 389. This was followed by the establishment of Governor Holcomb’s Wetland Taskforce. \nThe repeal of the Navigable Waters Protection Rule\, a 2020 rule that narrowed the definition of “Waters of the United States (WOTUS)” which left isolated wetlands and ephemeral streams at risk. In this follow up forum\, researchers from several Indiana universities join with environmental management professionals and policy experts to discuss wetland hydrology and ecology\, how wetland footprints are affected by changing legislation\, and how resulting ecosystem services are lost or gained.  The speakers will also address recent legislation and identify future management issues. \nRegistration required. Register here.\nPlatform: WebEx

SUMMARY:Sycamore Land Trust Monarch Tagging
DESCRIPTION:The Indiana Wildlife Federation (IWF) routinely hosts Monarch Tagging events as a tool to educate both youth and adults about the unique\, fragile and wonderous life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus). At these events\, we train learners to gently capture monarch butterflies in butterfly nets and affix a small numbered sticker to the hindwing. These events can happen at any outdoor location where monarchs are routinely present. Stickers and datasheets are ordered through the international monarch monitoring program called Monarch Watch. We hope to see you at a tagging!
