SUMMARY:Cranes Over Indiana a IWF Member Gathering
DESCRIPTION:An evening with Lauren Benedict\, International Crane Foundation\, learning about Indiana’s conservation of Sandhill and Whooping Cranes. \n \nJoin us after work for a casual gathering with food/beverages\, comradery\, music\, and a presentation from the International Crane Foundation about Indiana’s role in protecting our migrating cranes and their habitats. \nCranes over Indiana: Indiana’s wetlands are home to Sandhill Cranes and endangered Whooping Cranes. In the not-so-distant past\, both Sandhill Cranes and Whooping Cranes faced near extinction throughout North America as they battled with increasing threats of unregulated hunting and habitat loss. Thanks to widespread conservation efforts\, Sandhill Cranes are now one of the most populous crane species in the world\, and Whooping Crane populations\, while still endangered\, are slowly growing. Today Indiana residents see around 60\,000-80\,000 Sandhill Cranes and 30 Whooping Cranes each year! Unfortunately\, Whooping Cranes and Sandhill Cranes continue to face threats in Indiana and across their flyway. Following this presentation\, you will be able to identify Sandhill Cranes and Whooping Cranes\, know the history of both species\, understand the current work our crane conservation partners are doing to protect cranes in Indiana and throughout their flyways and find out how you can be an ambassador for cranes in Indiana as a volunteer and citizen scientist. \n \n                                       Agenda \n5:00 PM – 5:45 PM\, Welcome + food/beverage + music \n5:45 PM – 6:30 PM\, Cranes Over Indiana with Lauren Benedict\, Outreach Biologist Assistant\, Indiana \n6:30 PM – 8:00 PM\, Music + mingle \nNot an IWF member? SUMMARY:Hydrogen in Appalachia: Opportunities\, Challenges\, and Federal Investments
DESCRIPTION:The Indiana Wildlife Federation invites you to  join the National Wildlife Federation and a panel of experts on April 24 from 2-3 p.m. ET for an educational webinar: Hydrogen in Appalachia: Opportunities\, Challenges\, and Federal Investments . While Indiana does not fall into Appalachia\, many of the struggles  are shared between the Appalachian region and the Hoosier state\, come learn about the risks and rewards of hydrogen production! \nHydrogen’s ability to store and produce energy without harmful byproducts has made it a prime focus for future use in electricity generation\, transportation\, and other hard-to-decarbonize sectors. However\, scaling up the use of hydrogen comes with numerous challenges\, risks\, and considerations. Join to learn more about hydrogen as a potential clean energy solution and recent federal investments in hydrogen – including what we know about plans for a hydrogen hub in Appalachia. \n\nOur panelists: \n\nDr. Simone Stewart\, Senior Industrial Policy Specialist\, National Wildlife Federation\nSarah Spence\, Midwest Regional Director\, Conservative Energy Network\nRob Altenburg\, Senior Director for Energy and Climate\, PennFuture\nSean O’Leary\, Senior Researcher\, Energy and Petrochemicals\, Ohio River Valley Institute\n\n\nWednesday\, April 24 | 2-3 p.m. ET |  Register: https://nwf-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_fUBq-iIhRDiiNfOrigkO-Q

SUMMARY:Indiana Wetland Advocacy\, Preservation\, and Restoration
DESCRIPTION:This year\, the Indiana General Assembly passed SEA 389\, which significantly reduced protection for Indiana’s remaining wetlands.  It was a blow to all who understand the vital importance of wetlands to water resources and to wildlife\, but it was not an endpoint.  There is much we can still do ensure the continuation of Indiana’s wetlands.  The Hoosier Environmental Council and Indiana Wildlife Federation are hosting a webinar to review steps we can all take.   \nPlease join us for ‘Indiana Wetland Advocacy\, Preservation\, and Restoration’ Wednesday\, October 20\, at 4:00 PM Eastern/3:00 PM Central.  Register at:   tinyurl.com/3pzvc379 \n

SUMMARY:PARTNER EVENT - Indiana Wetlands II: Where are we now? Virtual Forum
DESCRIPTION:Much has happened since the first co-hosted forum with IWF Affiliate: White River Alliance and Purdue in February. First\, the passage of SEA 389. This was followed by the establishment of Governor Holcomb’s Wetland Taskforce. \nThe repeal of the Navigable Waters Protection Rule\, a 2020 rule that narrowed the definition of “Waters of the United States (WOTUS)” which left isolated wetlands and ephemeral streams at risk. In this follow up forum\, researchers from several Indiana universities join with environmental management professionals and policy experts to discuss wetland hydrology and ecology\, how wetland footprints are affected by changing legislation\, and how resulting ecosystem services are lost or gained.  The speakers will also address recent legislation and identify future management issues. \nRegistration required. Register here.\nPlatform: WebEx

This monthly series of webinars features topics in Clean Water\, Ecosystem Restoration\, Research\, Education\, Transportation\, Flood Control and Recreation. The Series was created by the Ohio River Recreation Trail in 2020. In 2021\, the Series was expanded with additional partners to provide additional content and support. The Partners include the Ohio River Recreational Trail\, the Ohio River Basin Alliance\, the Foundation for Ohio River Education\, ORSANCO\, and the National Park Service. \nTo register for the next Ohio River Discussion: Understanding Microplastics in the Ohio River Basin\, 12:00 pm (EDT) April 27\, 2021: REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:Mapping Climate & Environmental Justice: Lessons Learned from Local & Regional Tools
DESCRIPTION:PARTNER EVENT: National Wildlife Federation – Federal policymakers are giving increasing focus to environmental justice mapping tools\, recognizing their potential in furthering environmental and climate justice. These tools can reveal what kinds of communities are (and aren’t) at risk from environmental hazards\, and the compounded pollution and climate burdens some communities face. These tools can also help policymakers understand where environmental justice communities are located\, and where climate impacts are being felt first and worst—information that should help inform the ambitious climate priorities of the Biden-Harris administration. \nThis webinar will highlight lessons learned from existing local and regional mapping tools and efforts to inform these current national discussions.

SUMMARY:The Value of All Wetlands: Indiana Researchers Weigh In
DESCRIPTION:Scientists from universities across Indiana will share research on the value of isolated wetlands\, which are vital to the health of Indiana’s ecology\, water and people. These unique and important ecosystems are currently threatened by Senate Bill 389\, which would repeal critical wetland protections in Indiana. Dr. Sara McMillan will moderate a forum with speakers from Purdue University\, Indiana University\, Notre Dame and IUPUI about many ecosystem functions that isolated wetlands provide including: flood storage\, wildlife habitat\, water quality improvements\, and carbon storage.
