With nearly 15 million acres of Hoosier land classified as agricultural, we must include these lands in our efforts to benefit wildlife. Deleterious production techniques’ effects are apparent within our borders, but the impacts are felt as far afield as the Gulf of Mexico. With some of the most polluted waterways in the country and habitat dead zones, it is clear that we have great room to improve. With production techniques such as conservation tillage, cover cropping, and riparian buffers, working lands throughout our state can transition from part of the problem to a part of the solution. These techniques not only benefit water quality and wildlife habitat but also contribute to profitability and the long-term viability of agricultural communities.
