Indiana University – South Bend

South Bend, Indiana

IU South Bend has a highly accomplished sustainability program. They have several initiatives on campus such as a new parking lot made with permeable surfaces and rain gardens stocked with native plants. As a result, their new parking lot filters pollutants from cars which often run off impermeable surfaces and directly into our waterways. There are native wetland plantings on campus which are used by staff and students to do research on pollinators and their relationship with native plants. The campus also has composting options alongside their trash and recycling services and a host of other programs in place.

To certify their campus, IU South Bend hosted the Northwest Happenings Conference where numerous groups from Indiana’s northwest came together to discuss environmental and conservation issues in their part of the state. The sessions was very informative and a great opportunity for people doing good work to collaborate and enhance their efforts.
